With the January 2018 update to Photoshop CC 2018, users gained one of the most anticipated features to date: Select Subject. Powered by Adobe Sensei, their enigmatic AI, the time it once took to make complex selections has now been drastically reduced.
In the brief video above, Howard Pinsky demonstrates how well Select Subject performs by selecting two complicated subjects: a bearded man, and a lion. With one click, Select Subject impresses, reducing what used to take many minutes into the span of a single click.

Further aided by the Select and Mask tool, dealing with hair is no longer the daunting task it once was.
For artists creating composite images, or retouchers who need to quickly select subjects for cleaning up hair or a backdrop, this new tool is a major game changer.
Access Select Subject in one of the following ways in Photoshop:
- While editing an image, choose Select > Subject.
- While using the Quick Selection or Magic Wand tools, click Select Subject in the options bar.
- While using the Quick Selection tool in the Select & Mask workspace, click Select Subject in the options bar.
