Beauty, wellness, and lifestyle brands and service businesses run on visually impactful imagery: studio beauty, ambient lifestyle, and cinematic campaign work. All of it is retouched before it is published, following current trends and the aesthetics of the times.

Once your photography and retouching skills are solid and you have some paid work experience, commercial clients are the logical next step. Unlike private clients, they come with defined briefs, larger budgets, and repeat projects, plus a lot of publicity for your portfolio, for example, in the form of Sephora point-of-sale prints, billboards, and magazine ads.

Most brands now publish across many channels daily to stay visible to their customers, and the demand for high-quality visuals keeps growing. Much of that work is being absorbed by marketing teams and content creators, while it is skilled photographers and retouchers who best understand the craft, digital image handling, and the nuances of visual production and post-production, and who should position themselves to reclaim the market they are best qualified for.

At the same time, commercial beauty visual standards have been changing significantly in recent years. Most brands now expect real skin texture and more natural retouching results, while still asking for final images that feel elevated and refined.

This type of “polished while natural” look actually requires a more advanced retouching skill level, and this course teaches a range of techniques, so you can take your retouching as far as your client’s brief requires.

This course goes beyond just the technique and workflows. It covers the areas of expertise a retouching professional is expected to have: file handling, proper PSD file structure, business etiquette, and methods commonly used in a professional environment when working in-house.

Once internalized through deliberate practice, these skills open a range of paths: offering retouching services to commercial clients, pursuing senior in-house retouching roles, or managing post-production workflows and interfacing with photography and retouching vendors on behalf of commercial clients. Most of our Avenue studio retouchers took RA courses and use our methods and workflows.
