The New Most Powerful GPU Technology Promises Amazing Improvements In Post-Production Tools and Techniques

NVIDIA recently announced its new Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) named “Volta” which will bring Artificial Intelligence (AI) supercomputing and Deep Learning technology to GPUs in every industry.

A few months ago the company shared that it had been working on Deep Learning methods that may end up changing how we color grade our images, and with its ray tracing technology in gaming. It’s very exciting to see how this new technology will improve post-production tools and techniques!

With this unprecedented leap in GPU technology, Volta, equipped with 640 tensor cores and over 21 billion transistors, is capable of processing 100 Teraflops of data per second, making it 5x faster than its predecessor, the NVIDIA Pascal GPU. The company claims Volta is the most powerful architecture the world has ever seen.

A GPU is the number one factor that will affect the performance of your creative workflow. For example, here are some of the features in Photoshop that require a GPU:

  • Camera RAW
  • Image Size – Preserve Details
  • Select Focus
  • Blur Gallery – Field Blur, Iris Blur, Tilt-Shift, Path Blur, Spin Blur (OpenCL accelerated)
  • Smart Sharpen (Noise Reduction – OpenCL accelerated)
  • Perspective Warp
  • Select and Mask (OpenCL accelerated)
  • Artboards

Currently, the only cards available with the Volta architecture is the TITAN V, but at $2,999 many consumers are wondering when the tech will trickle down into more affordable GeForce consumer lines and third-party manufacturers. The company’s current consumer level flagship is the GeForce 1080ti and it is using the Pascal architecture.

The next GeForce is rumored to be named “Turing” GTX 1180, though it’s still unclear if it will be equipped with the new Volta architecture. Originally speculated to hit the shelves on July 30th, CEO Jensen Huang stated in a recent press conference and told reporters that the next incarnation of the GeForce line “is still a long ways away.”

While we don’t know how long he meant by “a long ways away” and it was never clarified, it’s already been 2 years since the release of the GTX 1080ti, therefore the extra time needed for the GTX 1180 might be an indication of the company’s effort to ensure it comes equipped with the new Volta architecture.
