Beauty Retouching, Stay Inspired

Announcing Our Beauty Retouching Contest Winners

We are very pleased to announce the winners of our Beauty Retouching Contest in the Beginner and Enthusiast Categories and we would like to thank all of the entrants for helping to make this Contest a success!

We received an amazing number of submissions and we know everyone worked hard on their images; it’s wonderful to see so much retouching talent around the globe!

The main criteria for selecting the winners was the quality of their performed beauty retouching on the Contest images that we provided – one for each category. Retouching Academy, Wacom and Capture One teams were looking for submitted images, in which retouching artists created a flattering look of the skin while preserving its texture and respecting the authentic shapes and dimensions of the original capture. Hair retouching is often secondary in the beauty photography genre, but it is never completely ignored. Some distracting stray hairs are lightly cleaned up and hair shapes may be gently improved, while preserving the original hair style created by the team at the time of the shoot, unless otherwise instructed in the brief. And lastly, we were looking for images in which the artist achieved a pleasing skin tone, consistent throughout the shot, and, of course, did not forget to address the makeup and nails.

Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, Wacom and Capture One, contest winners will receive some fantastic prizes. The First Prize winner in the Enthusiast category will receive a Wacom Intuos Pro graphics tablet (medium size, retail $349.99); the First Prize winner in the Beginner category will receive a Wacom Intuos (retail $99.95). The Second Prize winner in the Enthusiast category will receive a Capture One Pro license (retail $299) and the RA Retouching Panels ($69) for Adobe® Photoshop®; the Second Prize winner in the Beginner category will receive a choice of the RA video courses (Master D&B or Color Grade) along with the RA Retouching Panels.

The winner of our Social Media Prize will have his or her Beauty, Fashion or Portrait Portfolio reviewed by Michael Woloszynowicz and Julia Kuzmenko McKim.

You can find the Official Rules of the Contest here.

Future Contests

We really enjoyed running this Contest and receiving your wonderful feedback! We would love to do more retouching contests in the future, including some that are more topic- or brief-oriented.

Our goal is twofold: to highlight talented artists from around the globe and to enable artists to test their skills and attention to detail against requirements similar to those in the professional retouching industry.

We’d love to hear your suggestions and feedback on the first RA Beauty Retouching Contest – what did you like the most? Was there anything that you did not like?

Please let us know via our Contact page, we want to do more events like this and keep them enjoyable for everyone!

  4. Edita says:

Congratulations to the winners, and the Retouching Academy for organising such competition.
I hope this was the start of something, we, retouchers, would be able to call our ”retouching olympic” games one day. I also hope we are not going to need 4 years of waiting before next competition starts 🙂

Winning or not winning the competition – isn’t the main goal, but the chance to be in the competition, and learn from the best ones.

I understand, this is almost imposible to expect feedback for every single image, retouched for the competition.
But it would be so useful if we could have a chance to know which area in particular the winners images were better than the other images submited.

    1. Julia McKim says:

Thank you so much for your feedback Edita!

I do believe it will be very helpful for everyone who entered and everyone who juts watched, if we record a video where we can explain what exactly made the winners win and what common mistakes we noticed among the submissions, since this is a perfect set up for such an analysis – same images and a large number of artists taking their swing at them.

And thank you for the exciting analogy with the Olympic Games, I will make sure to share this with our Wacom friends, and plan the next one sooner! 🙂

  5. Congratulations!!! Awesome Work all the winners, I can’t wait for the Next contest. Thank you retouching academy, participate was a wonderful experience.

  7. Ivan Z says:

I’m very upset that you don’t appreciate any forms of creativity. Pretty sure, my work was the most creative.
At least now you’ve specified the criteria more clearly… OK.
Next time you should make nominations “technical retouching” & “creative retouching”.

As for the winning variants – almost no difference between them. And I guess, there were dozens of similar pictures.

    3. Julia McKim says:

Ivan, with all due respect, your claims of submitting the most “creative” work to the Beauty Retouching Contest are really puzzling. We have discussed it in the Retouching Academy group and a few photographers and retouchers explained to you that Beauty Retouching is not the same as Creative Retouching. But even if it was a creative retouching contest, your submission would still not be among the finalists. Your submission is not a burst of creativity, you just inverted colors in Photoshop, and the resulting picture makes no sense to me or anyone who has seen it in the group:

How is this a creative submission in any contest?

  8. Fabrizio Martina says:

Congrats to all the winner! Very good works.

    1. Julia McKim says:

      Thank you Fabrizio! 🙂

  12. Thank you Retouching Academy for creating this contest. I think it’s a great opportunity for us retouchers to measure our skills and in a some way have a contact with you who are professionals with such talent. Besides this type of contest help a lot to create confidence in ourselves as retouchers. I wait for the next contest, and then I can send my photo on time, because unfortunately I send my photo 15 minutes after the closing time, and I think I was disqualified for that, my fault. It was frustrating, but hey, the next time will be! 🙂 , I hope so hehe. Thanks to Julia and Michael and congratulations to the winners. Bye. Greetings from Colombia. 😉

    1. Julia McKim says:
